So how do I install Quicktime
when I get this error message: "quicktimeinstaller.exe is not a valid Win32 application"?
I've tried the obvious: emptied my temp folders, used three different browsers browsers. In judging a two-person singing contest, never award the prize to the second soprano having heard only the first.

Did you get the file directly from apple.com?

Yes.
In fact, I went to Apple after an autoupdate failed (with the error message that the certificate was invalid). In judging a two-person singing contest, never award the prize to the second soprano having heard only the first.

Oh, I have other codecs. That wasn't the question, though.

It's not a codec, it's Quicktime alternative. It may work for you. The reason why I use it instead of Apple's is because Apple's will install itunes and I don't need the bloatware.
QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt, .3gp and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages.

QuickTime does not require iTunes.
Theo, have you tried the nuclear approach? Delete QT entirely then try to re-install? Or are you trying to install it for the first time? Which OS are we dealing with here?Good job, friend-of-friends!

Well, since I use iTunes, that isn't a problem.
No, I haven't nuked the current install. The OS is 64-bit Win7 SP1.

QuickTime is available as a stand alone download.
Theo, the reason I mention nuking it is I had a similiar problem (although it was on Vista at the time) and I ended up just deleting it entirely off the computer. When it re-installed, it worked fine.
I've heard that pop-up blockers can interfere with downloads from Apple, so if you have pop-up blockers enabled on your browsers, disabling them temporarily during the download and install might help.Good job, friend-of-friends!

Well, I installed Apple's quicktime into Win 7 in the virtual machine and it didn't install itunes this time. The last time I installed quicktime (years ago) it installed itunes.
