i find 2k much better than xp, it plays every game i own almost every piece of hardware works , i dont get annoying balloons or pop ups. win2k doesnt call home everytime i use search, you can swap hardware about and it doesnt ask you to re-register, it doesnt throw a paddy when you do more than one thing at a time, doesnt have all that eye candy that hogs system resourses
blah blah blah!

anyone think im dissin xp

I use win 2k pro on all my systems but my laptop now.. I use to use XP on a few.. but I went back to 2k.. it is more stable for what I do.. which is graphic work.. and well playing games =) I've never had a problem with playing games on either xp, or 2k..

2k has been out longer.. meaning it will be your better patched.. and more stable of the 2.. XP they are still finding out what all has holes in it.. like all windows before it.. If u r going to get XP.. wait till a B version comes out..

as for drivers.. if u find 2k drivers.. for the most part they should work under xp.. as xp's core is made up of allot of 2k pro.. so your scanner might actualy work.. then again it might be one of the few that doesn't

I suggest WinXP. As was already mentioned here, Windows XP should run games better. I remember one game where the readme or manual (forgot which) specifically said that the game should be played in Windows XP instead of Windows 2000. I was actually having problems when I was trying to run it in Win2K.

If you do get Windows XP, get the Pro version, and not the Home edition (as was also mentioned here). Interestingly, you can't use the upgrade version of the home edition to upgrade from Win2K. Win2K actually has features that WinXP Home is missing, so it would basically be a downgrade.

I'd say go for Win2K. Personally I haven't had much better luck gaming with XP than with 2K, and 2K has definitely been more stable all around. My current machine has Win98, Win2K, and WinXP on it, so when I do a comparison between OSs it's truly a fair comparison since they all use the exact same hardware. XP's advantages are very minimal.

I use 2k on my three systems. i'd say its more stable than xp but others will argue otherwise. xp basically has the features of ME and the stability and security of 2k. i've heard that more games are supported on xp but the only games i play work great on 2k. of course if you buy xp (its actually cheaper than 2k on newegg.com) then you have the ability to downgrade to 2k without having a licsense for it. kinda cool i think. but you'd need to get ahold of a copy of the CD. but i'm sure you could handle that

I use Win2K Pro at work and WinXP Pro at home. My Win2K system at work has more of a tendency to lockup or have problems - but mostly with two specific apps. I have a much newer and faster system at home running WinXP. I have tried out Win2K Pro on my home system for a few days, but it was noticeably slower in overall operation. I install lots of software - not that many games though - and I have never had any problems with any software yet. I have never crashed with WinXP under normal conditions (not normal is doing something I expect to possibly cause problems - moving a card to a new PCI slot, overclocking CPU too far, etc). I also want to do 2 monitors, and WinXP provides a better solution for that than Win2K - Win2K does not support independent resolutions on each monitor (source is ATI FAQ page Q36 for Radeon 8500). I'll stick with XP.

DieMaker is correct about the dual monitors. WinXP works with any dual head cards while 2k has to use certian ones. For example the Radeon 7500 VE Dual Head doesn't work with 2k. I'd say that if I got a dual head deal i'd go with a Matrox G550 and stay with 2k. I setup a client with XP Home on a Toshiba 5005 latptop on a Geforce 4 card with dual monitors and it was super easy. Thats the only dual setup i've ever done.

Hmmmm....thanks for all the replys. It looks like a coin toss.

I will probably start with 2000 as I have a copy of it & I may change the hardware around a little at first. The XP rego does seem like a pain.
