Help....2000 or XP???

Hello,

I'm building a new system based around an ASUS A7V333-Raid, mostly for mp3's, Digital Photography(Stills), Office, internet & warcraft 3.

I have to choose between Windows 2000 or XP(& I have 98Se & ME but had decided not to use these) . The only downside I can see with Xp is that my scanner is not & will not be supported with XP. OpticPro is not going to produce drivers for its older scanners.

What are the advantages of XP over 2000???
Will I also run into software problems with some of my older programs & XP??

What is your vote for my situation???

Thanks,

Pete.

If you're really worried about program compatibility, go with Win2k. XP is a big hassle if you upgrade your hardware often, and can give problems if the drivers aren't "Microsoft Certified" to work with WinXP. The only advantage of XP over 2k is that XP comes with built-in eye-candy, zipping software, and burning software. Otherwise they're the same.

Oh yeah, XP is also slightly less of a memory hog if you turn all of the effects off.

If you plan to do some gaming XP probably would be the better choice as 2k doesn't do games very well.

If the choice ends up being XP, I'd go for the XP pro edition and not the home edition.

As for the older programs being able to run best I can suggest is to go to the programs website and see if they are compatiable with the lastest os's.

Edit: emc does have a good point as well. I guess its a matter of what is more important, being able to use the current programs including scanner or games.

I would choose XP Pro. I used 2k pro before and XP is just more stable, runs nicer, smoother, and the multipe user logon thingy (fast user switching) is uber 1337

I'm not a die hard gamer, but the few games that I play run perfectly under Win2K (sp2).

Currently installed:
- Half Life (+Counter Strike)
- Return to Castle Wolvenstein
- Unreal Tournament
- Red Alert 2

I'm currently using 2000, but if you have some compatability issues (software) I think XP has a compatability mode so you can run older software. Err.... atleast thats what my friend told me

why not do what I did... dual boot win98 and xp... than you can still use your scanner... and have the ease of xp... it works real well for me... it means putting an extra partition on your drive or using 2 hardrives though...another upside... if you need to reinstall xp... it's easier to do a clean install...

good luck!

I've used both win2k, and now i'm using XP... I never had a problem with either OS. All the games that i played worked fine under win2k as they do with winxp... XP does seem a little more stable, but win2k was pretty solid too.

you can do a clean install... but you need to format and install win 98 first... it's just an extra step...

it's just I've found doing a clean install with the home full version nearly impossible without going thru win 98... anytime I try and delete the primary partition it says it can't do it... alas... I dual boot and actually like it a lot better anyway!

anyone else have problems doing a clean install of xp?... clean meaning not leaving all your old files hidden on the harddrive...
