hmmmmm Exactly what kind of computer did you buy with XP? and why did you put your old hard drive in the newer machine with an existing hard drive already? unless you was wanting daul hard drives.
Also did you format your old hard drive before installing XP ? If you haven't reformated, its best to back up your data and then re install XP on a clean blank drive. |

ok on the old HD there is still Win98 with my files (flash-fla and other things i would never delet) and both are connected
(old HD Win98 and new HD WinXP) so i can use the files from the old HD, but there are some program and games i just can play it on Win98 (that's not the problem!!)
It's a HP
2,2GHz
265 MBRAM
Geforce2 MX 400 / 64 MBRAM
DVD-Player (not important i think )
Win XP was already installed

what new drivers did you install??? if your primary drive is the one w/XP loaded there should not be any need to install addt'l drivers.
and also for dsl/cable modem connections, you do not usually need to assign an IP (static) to the nic, tcpip should be set to dynamic. gateway can usually be left blank as well. |

ok again
1) old HD Win98 from old PC.
2) New HD WinXP from new PC.
3) old HD in new PC (boot with old HD).
4) install all driver from the New PC on Old HD.
5) intern IP adresse because i'm behind a firewall, in a local network!!

but the problem that you're having is quite simple...your win98 installation does not recognize the onboard nic...probably because it is a new model released after win98 came out. go to the hp website (using a different computer of course) and d/l the proper driver for that model (i hope they have a win98 driver for it or else you'll need to d/l the oem driver from the nic manufacturer) and copy it to either floppy if it fits) or cd and then manually install the nic driver.
or you can make it easy on yourself and put back the drive w/XP as primary. then copy the data from the old drive and reinstall the the apps/games onto xp. |

I have never heard of running to os at the same time. I could be wrong tho, but I think you will need a bootloader to handle your dual boot machine. |

you cannot run 2 different os'es at the same time.
if you want to multi-boot between win98 & xp you would need to do one of the following:
1. install a 3rd party boot manager like system commander, bootmagic, etc and then reinstall the second os (the 2nd os would be the non-default os which appears when you boot-up)
2. wipe the drive clean and install win98 first, followed by xp. you need to install them in exactly this order, if the native microsoft bootloader is to work properly. |

Neostart is correct. You can't run more than one OS at once in windows.
You will need a boot loader.
Couple of points already mentioned but I'll highlight them, creatures:
1. Not a good idea to use win98 straight off another system, as the drivers and stuff are diff and it won't work properly. You need to reinstall win98 on the new system as a dual boot so it recognises all the right files.
2. The easiset way to install win98 and winXP as a dual boot is to install win98 first, then winXP. The reason is that win98 overwrites the XP bootloader.
3. BUT - you can install win98 AFTER winXP as long as you know how to restore the mbr from the winXP CD. I did, but in a partition on the same disk, not a second drive.
4. I'm not sure if winXP bootloader will let you boot win98 off a second drive or not. You may need a third party bootloader like Boot Magicg (comes with Partition Magic). Check that out before you start - may save some headaches!
5. My suggestion would be do a LOT of reading up on how to dual boot winXP and win98, then save your files/games from the win98 drive and reinstall it. You may be able to install OVER the old install, but it might not like it as it already has drivers and stuff and may cause more probs. A clean install would be better. Enough rambling, Mick!
OK, now do a google on dual boot winXp win98 and see what you find. Good luck.
Cheers
Mick
