spdif connection to surround sound receiver

Hey all, I just got my new laptop and I attempted to hook it up to my dvd player / receiver (it's 2 in 1); I have an 1/8" jack y-cable to 2 rca adapters which plug into the receiver; problem is when i do this i don't get anything, just hissing and popping....amd I doing things wrong? thanks a lot

make sure you are connecting from your soundcard out to reciever in. otherwise check your soundcard drivers, does your laptop have inbuilt speakers? is the sound fine? you may need to reinstall the drivers.
