Hello Im trying to delete a file but it keeps saying access is denied is there a utility that will wipe it out or a way to wipe it out. Also when I you the dos prompt
C: attrib -a C:\etc\etc\etc
it says sharing violation reading drive C:
Now I cannot stand having a file that tells me access is denied to it. If I want it gone I want the ability to delete it.
C: del C:\etc\etc\etc
just says access denied |

Try
attrib -r -a -s -h C:\filename
Sometimes a hidden or system file can have this effect, so removing those attributes can fix it.
EDIT: A sharing violation, means that the file is open or is in use by some program, and cannot be deleted. . .. If you are running windows 9x, try booting straight into dos, and delete it from there.

Ummm you're SURE this is a user file and not a system file correct?
If its a system file, the OS will try to protect itself against the user by not allowing you to delete a system file in use, hence the access denied.
Also is this apersonal machine or a work machine? if its a work machine you may not have rights to it.
Oh and umm don't delete the system volume information folder or pagefile.sys

Deny that!
Seriously thanks everyone booting into dos did the trick...I found something out though I used the WIN.com tip about changing the WIN to something else then when windows restarts an error is produced...type the name you replaced win with and windows starts...well when I exited dos using the exit command nothing...I cannot be sure but I believe this prevented windows from restarting. |

Dont delete what. A useless file that serves no other purpose than taking up 832kb of my harddrive. Or did you assume I deleted the win.com file. |
