sound driver problem

I have a winXP machine, an intel motherboard with an on-board sound card. However, my sound has not been working lately. It appears as though my computer doesnt see my sound card at all, although the drivers install succesfully. Under the driver properties, it tells me that the driver is enabled, but has not been started.. so i've restarted my computer many times-- no luck yet. I dont have any other sound cards in my computer.. dont know why it doesnt work.
I downloaded the drivers given through "update driver".. which used to work for me. Any suggestions?
Oh, the motherboard is a D815EEA - intel. I orginally had many problems when updating to winXP, but somehow they were all worked out.. no clue now.

i have the same problem. is it sound blaster b creative cuz if it is tune into my thread. my thread also has stuff about geforce 4 mx 420 video card.

Just a quick check, do you have all of the onboard sound selections enabled in the BIOS?

yes the bios is the same as when it used to work.

i have been using the soundmax driver. Sometimes when i go to 'update driver' it gives me a different driver- the AC '97 driver- which has never worked. I just downloaded Soundmax from the intel website and reinstalled it-- but the same problem persists. I'm going to go check out your thread themaster.

my thread doesnt really have that much sound card stuff. we got more into the video card but i want to get more into the sound part cuz i need to listen to my mp3s!
