I am getting a KT3Ultra2 board that has usb 2.0. Do I absolutely need to buy new usb 2 cables, or can I use the old ones? If I use the old ones, will it really compromise the benefit us 2.0? |

I didn't know USB2 had it's own cables. I just bought a new mobo that has USB 2.0, but I don't have any devices that support it yet. I'd think that it should work fine. I mean they LOOK the same right!?! |

From EverythingUSB.com : Quote: |
Today’s USB 1.1 connectors and full-speed cables will support the higher speeds of USB 2 without any changes. ... However, ... USB 1.1 hubs cannot work with USB 2 hardware.

I replaced my older USB scanner for a Canoscan that utilizes USB 2.0. I installed a USB 2.0 PCI card and bought a 10 foot USB 2.0 cable. I believe the cable must be compliant with 2.o to get the full benefit of the faster interface.
Run a Search here at TechIMO. You will find this discussed at length with links during the past 2-3 months.

Due to Lexmark Tech Support using the excuse "You must use a USB 1.1 cable with our printer because a USB 2.0 cable will not properly communicate." I contacted 2 different respectable cable manufacturer's. I was told that the only difference in their cables was that the USB 2.0 cables had been tested to meet the new specification. The only change was in the packaging!
When I informed a Lexmark Tech of this, his next response was, "Then it's a compatibility issue with your operating system." YEAH RIGHT!!! The Lexmark X63, X73, and X83 aren't compatible with Win98, WinME, or WinXP then!!
I know of several customers that have returned their Lexmarks and purchased other brands and had no more problems! The one exception was a customer with a Dell 8100. MoBo issue, they sent him a new Dell!

My guess would be that the USB 2.0 cables might have just a little extra shielding to support that increased data transfer rate.
They're supposed to be backward compatible w/ USB 1.1 devices.
I usually pick them up cheap,($1.75 or less) from www.compgeeks.com
I have a question. Do you think an aftermarket front bay panel,
such as the Enermax Multifunction Panel, which runs a cable back to the rear USB(2.0) port would support a USB 2.0 device? (The
front connection is only rated or advertised as being for USB 1.1).
