I currently have an AMD k6-II 250Mhz running at 500Mhz on a Socket 7 MB. I want to upgrade to a faster processor, but that entails a new MB since I can only upgrade to a k6-III and I want to go over1Ghz.
I need to know what all should I know before shopping for a new motherboard and processor.
Am I going to need new sound, video, and memory? I just bought two sticks of memory a couple of months ago and my video card is a GeForce2. I’m running on Win98se but I also what to upgrade to XP.
Basically should I bother building it or should I just get a completed system?

1)Post up all of the hardware that you have now. (fairly detailed, for example: 256mb PC2100 DDR RAM rather than just RAM)
2)What will you be using this new computer for?

depends on if you want to get your hands 'dirty'.
dell has specials they run from time to time...there was a recent one for a p4 533fsb system w/o monitor for ~$500.
amd systems aren't bad either. the big negative against them is that they run hot. but having a multi-fan unit underneath my desk buzzing away isn't exactly my idea of a ideal work environment...
also if you don't have a copy of xp, buying a prebuilt system system will take care of that as well. |

Is this for real ???
1. AMD never made a 250.
2. It damn sure won't o/c to 500 and not on a socket 7
3. So are you just wasting time or was this a serious post but ya just got your info wrong ??? |

Yea, must have meant 450.
John's absolutely right. If you're going to use the build as a learning experience, by all means, go ahead and build it. That way
you'll know everything about your machine firsthand.
On the other hand, if you're not going to get into OC'ing, it's hard
to beat a Dell deal that Doc references on a regular basis.
My first WinXP machine I bought from Dell, because after costing
out the individual components and operating system, I discovered
that I couldn't build it for less than Dell. And they are very quiet
machines, just not tremendous performance and expandability,
and small power supplies(250watt).
I added my own extra memory, DVD-ROM, soundcard, speakers, and monitor.
Just some things to think about. . .Good luck |

I'd just go with building another complete system. You could probably save your video card, maybe sound too, but I'm betting you'd have to replace everything else. If you're going for a decent system don't settle for SDRAM, skip on to DDR for an AMD system and RDRAM for an Intel.
Prester, do you remember the specs on the P4 533fsb system? If it includes OS, 1066 RDRAM, 7200 HD, and a decent vid card I might give one a shot.

Well, I'm no expert. I ran a system check on my machine a while back and it stated the processor was 250Mhz( maybe it was 233) and I needed an upgrade. I know it is an AMD K6-II and when the comp loads its says 500Mhz is the speed. My b/f built this thing about 2 years ago and the teacher of the class showed them how to overclock it. I'm just going by the info I was given. |
