Palladium - how does it work? Rather than blow SoCalGals AMD thread.... This is open to all responders: Quote:
First, what is a digitally signed program and second, how does the hardware give a hoot? Is the hardware asking the software for the softwares' numbers? If so, can the magic numbers be read back out of the hardware, by some software? If the software is enabling or disabling the hardware via a logic state, what happens if all software always said to the hardware: 'Yes, I match'? I'm so very digitally challenged, having been analog all my career, I get lost in the transition from hardware to software, as many have noticed. |
Dunbar: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/users/rja14/tcpa-faq.html this should answer your questions regarding that. A quick synopsis is that the fritz chip will intercept the data before it is processed by the processor. Not digitally signed processes will not be processed. The software must be digitally signed and unaltered to pass through the fritz chip, hence why the software can restrict what you play. The software either says yes or no. If you alter the software to trick it, it becomes not digitally signed, and thus will not pass through the fritz chip to be processed. Right now you cannot "forge" the yes I am digitally signed, as it is built into the software, and if altered the software will lose it's signature. And since you need to pay, after having the software reviewed and approved, digitally signing your own software will probably not be cheap, or if you allow playing of unauthorized media, possible. These things may change though, there may be ways to get around it, initially, when the chip is on the board, it could be bypassed. But once the chip heads inside the CPU it becomes much harder to get around this. Time will tell. |

(wow, read the link) Ugh. |
krohnjw, that was a GREAT link............ thanks. |
And just when you thought you were safe with an alternative distro, it does the bootstrap too......woohoo, no more booting a non signed OS. Hope you dont want to use any distro below palladium on a new board  what a joke. Go ahead and look through these slides detailing how it works http://www.cypherpunks.to/TCPA_DEFCON_10.pdf a huge bleh here. What a joke this is. Give slide 22 a look. What a freaking joke this is. Why does this not surprise me in the least that this is happening. 26 too, what "remote challengers" can see about you and your computer with their simple query. Grrrr. I am reading this while on the phone with a client. This is a joke. |
I think the linux community will have to get more actively involved in lobbying congress...... and other local political leaders. I can't imaging RedHat Mandrake or the Debian communities letting this just slip by...................... I know I don't want this to happen........ I'm just not real sure where to turn to act.......... hence my long rant http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthr...threadid=35559 I'm thinking about starting a petition on my website..... and mailing copies of it at my own expense to legislators...... This is Orson Wells stuff .................. |
Wow, i am still going through those slides. I encourage everyone to give the DRL a look. This seems like it violates my free speech as any software, pictures, anything can be placed on the DRL. http://www.cypherpunks.to/TCPA_DEFCON_10.pdf Slide 32 Slide 36 for fritz's grea bill Quote:
Yeah.... |
bah. i decided to not post on any of the other ones on this but i thought now was the time to put my 2 cents in. i think that is such bull..... it has to be part of Ms's plan to take over the world.... is it true that there is a part in the eula somewhere in XP that you WILL upgrade when it comes out? (to the next MS windows i mean) some one told me this but i'm not sure about it. and with MS stoping support for older window's i'll be soo pissed if i have to buy a new OS beacuse i upgraded my computer and the OS is to old to run on it. i'd still be using 98 if i hadn't goten 2k with a computer. man that is almost like forcing it down our necks to use the latest and greates MS product and not to pirate software or mp3's or divix movies. and i also agree with whoever said this but i will force my self to learn (really learn) Linux very fast if this happens. ok i'm done. edit: wow that whole activity corleations stuff dose sound like it violates something. |
Another great link krohnjw!! That PDF file and the link you posted above should be required reading of every American. BEFORE the elections! Any suggestions from anyone here on how to make a difference on this issue....... oh yeah.... don't say write my congressman..... I already did that..... (waste of paper-----guess I forgot to include my check) |
