isup, you should still follow strangerstill's instructions. Win2000 is the same.

For Win2000 the only time that autoexec.nt get used is when running apps in a command box (DOS box). I believe that's the case.

in system variables i clicked new and entered the path name. i cannot compile java code at DOS without putting the path name before javac. the insertion in system variables was to enable this. also i seem to have lost the original path information in the system variable. it's quite a long name. how can i recover it?
thanks

isup, your path will look something like this (remove the crap you don't have as your mileage may vary)

D:\Perl\bin\;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\S ystem32\Wbem;D:\Program Files\Resource Kit\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System

i found where i had written down the beginning of the path name. it was C:WINNT\system32;C:WINNT;C:\WIN... and it ended with wbem. are you saying i don,t need this path, or the new path that i inserted? this is it - c:\j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin.
why can't my java code find javac from the systems environment?
