DHCP Servers and XP Home

Why do you have to run WinXP Pro with a ADSL Router DHCP Server.

The reason I ask is that recently I setup a small network with 2 XP Home systems sharing a ADSL connection with a WIN98 PC and a NT server and three months later the two new machines lost their connection to the network. A friend techie gave the machines static IP's and that fixed the prob for awhile and mentions that I needed WIN XP Pro. I read a little about how a DHCP sServer issues dynamic IP's.

What is the difference between XP Pro and Home that makes Pro work and Home not work?

Home has crippled networking stuff in it. Not sure about DHCP as I don't use it much (use all static IP's), but I think Home has some differences with DHCP - Helmig has a list of differences, let me check...

Cheers

Hmm, nothing in Helmig's list about DHCP - only domains.

I can't see why Home should be different with DHCP, unless it is under a domain. That would do it.

Myself, I would use static IP's anyway unless you need portability to other LANs.

Cheers
Mick

XP Home can work correctly with either static or DHCP assigned IP addresses.

You mentioned you have NT server, if that is running a Domain then this is why your friend said you need XP Pro instead of XP Home (to be able to join the domain). This is one of the big differences between XP Home and Pro. mickwish's link should list most of the differences.
