Keyboard quit working???

Hey guys this is my first post so I'll do my best to describe the problem. Well first off the computer is a Sony PCV-RX780G it's got a P4 2.2 processor and it's Windows XP. I believe it's driver related but here we go.

The keyboard just won't work while in widows xp. I have an indentical machine so I copied the driver onto a floppy and was gonna try to install the drivers that the other machine had, but it didn't install because it said there was not a newer version. So anyway I restarted the machine and I forgot about the floppy being in there and it said to remove and strike any key. Well thinking nothing about it I did and it proceeded. The lights were on and everything, but when it proceeds to boot right at the windows screen the lights go out and the keyboard will no longer work. So since it did work before booting I know the keyboard isn't the problem. Any ideas? All yeah Sony is no help either

Are you using a PS/2 or USB keyboard?

Have you tried unpluggin/plugging the keyboard?

Can you get into the BIOS?

My bad. It's a ps/2 keyboard and I have tried unplugging and plugging it up. I've tried starting the computer without it plugged up and then plugging it back in and nothing. Device manager says the device is working properly.

While it's booting, you should see on the screen a key you have to press to get into the BIOS.

F1,F2, DEL . . . something like that.

If when you press the key and it doesn't let you in the BIOS, it's probably hardware related. Meaning either the keyboard or the mobo.

That being the case, try the keyboard from the other PC, if it still doesn't work, then it's probably the port on the mobo is bad.

If it does allow you to get in the BIOS, then reboot, when Windows comes back up, remove the device from Device Mangler, reboot, and let it reload the drivers itself.

Thanks man I'll try that. I don't think it's the keyboard. I tried using another ps/2 keyboard and restarted with it and nothing as well. If it was a different keyboard shouldn't it have started the add new hardware? Then again if it's the port then why did it work when the floppy was in the computer and it said to remove the non bootable disk and press enter. I pressed a bunch of other buttons before hitting enter and it just kept repeating so I know it's getting thru, but when it gets to the windows screen bam the lights on the keyboard go out and nothing after that. I'll try what you said though thanks

Keep in mind, Windows is going to load a default PS/2 driver for the keyboard. If it has "quick keys", you'll have to load software to use them

You could take 100 different PS/2 keyboards and Windows would never know the difference.

Yeah it's a sony keyboard, but the driver is for a standard 101/102 key, or microsoft natural. I looked at the other machine thats identical to be sure and it's got the same driver as this one. What makes me think it could be the port is that when I hooked up another ps/2 keyboard windows didn't look for hardware or nothing. I did a manually and everything and it still didn't find nothing. So I wonder when I delete the keyboard and restart it if it will even recgonzie it? The bad thing is the stupid thing is silver and so is the computer. Because I would just order a new usb keyboard. Unfortuneatly I think that the user will cry if it don't match

check the batteries? I usually find that as the cause to my problems :/

No the keyboard was never hot swapped. When I installed the machine I plugged it up and thats the last it was messed with it until I had problems with it.

Kraw what batteries are you talking about? cmos?
