    IR Port for desktop?

I would like to send files back and forth between my Nokia 7650 cell phone and my computer.

What kind of an IR port would I need (not sure how many types there are)

And are there any IR ports that go on the front of the computer as opposed to the rear where I would have no space to put the cell phone let alone position it in the right place?

    Thanks.

    Club,

I bought a USB IR device for my desktop while i was in Shanghai and it cost only 150RMB or USD18.25. it goes with the driver CD and extra USB extention cable. The brand is Carve. Sorry, I dont know if this is available in the U.S. It's a nice tool for cellular phones with IR ports. it's size is a bit bigger than normal USB flash disk.
    edit: spelling

Did you have to install it at the back of the comp (like the IR ports that go on a laptop) ? Or is there a way to have it at the front?

Ooh, you got a 7650 as well? That is one gorgeous device!

I'm using an EIO WaveLinker Bluetooth USB dongle, it cost me £26 from dabs.com, so say €40 or so. It's plugged into a front USB port (it looks nice and has pretty flashing lights on the antenna) but with the 10m range of bluetooth it should work plugged into the back as well.

It doesn't work all that well, I can't get the Nokia application to run, but I can at least transfer files back and forth using the OBEX protocol - I managed to get Doom installed, and also to transfer photos and sound clips between my PC and the phone.

I would certainly say go for bluetooth, it's a lot less fiddly than IR. One thing though, if you're planning on using Linux, I'd wait a while before trying to use bluetooth, the BlueZ and affix bluetooth stacks are coming along OK but I haven't managed to get file transfer working yet

    hello club,

as i have mentioned, it comes with a USB extension cable. I just have to use the USB cable to connect at the back of the PC and then to the IR device. So, i can position the IR device anywhere in my table. i use it to download and install games to my brother-in-law's 7650 from PC. very handy.

bluetooth is a quite advantageous since you dont have to secure line-of-sight like the IR requires. but it may be a bit expensive. and i think impractical if you only want to use it on the phones. the main reason i bought IR is because i want to change my cellphone's operator logo, ringtones, etc.

    regards,
    dax

Hmm, I got it from www.wildpalm.co.uk but they seem to have stopped distributing it, very annoying!

Jameco used to sell IRDA transceivers that plug into the IRDA headers of your mobo for about $50. You can also get USB to IRDA adapters for about as much
