| To build or not to build?
I will probably treat myself to a new computer once I get the money I've been waiting for forever...
If I choose to let the company I'm getting the parts from build the computer and test it I will have to pay $100 more.
I'm not very confident, and don't know if I can put the heatsink on myself.
It'll be at least an AMD Tbred 2200+ |

even if you buy a computer, you are going to want to add some improvements to it, so some building is nessary. With the cost of buying complete 'puters so cheap, you might buy a complete one and just modify it.
I have built many computers, I could probably build one in about an hour if you laid out all the parts for me.
The heatsink might be easy to do, its the newbie mistakes that you'll need to learn not to do, protecting the devices from ESD* doing a proper installation of the devices, and doing a clean looking install.
I suppose I could write a small tutorial about building boxes..
*ESD- Electro Static Discharge, if you don't know what this is and how to protect your devices, don't build your box. |

I wouldn't worry too much about installing the heatsink. A tip however... Install it while the motherboard is on a flat/hard surface. This will keep it from bending while you pop the clip on.
If you need some personal assistance.. to walk you through every step of putting it on, let me know! (Sending me a private message here would be fine)
In the very worst case scenario, you destroy the CPU. Replace it with the 'extra' $100, and you'll break even |

I'm not really scared of building the computer. The heatsink is the only thing I worry about. I have removed/attached heatsinks to my Celeron CPU's before, but never used any compound of any sort...
Oh well...I guess it's not even a question. Build... |

As far as the thermal compounds, I would suggest Arctic Silver 3 of course...they have a great tutorial (with pics) on their site: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm |

There you go just don't get in a rush take your time installing the hs/fan and you will be fine. Like rpertusio said above put the hs/fan on before installing the mobo in the case. Also don't use the hs/fan as a grip to put the mobo in(I've seen core get crushed by people using it as a hold to place the mobo in). Follow Martoch link how to apply the AS3 don't over apply and get it all over the place. It doesn't take much. |
