Hard drive not showing correct amount of space?

A while ago, on Gateway's website, I found an update for my BIOS. One of the problems it corrects is that some hard drives in Gateway computers will display an incorrect amount of space used up/free. I wasn't 100% sure my hard drive had this problem, but I had noticed some programs/games taking up odd amounts of space (according to My Computer). I never ended up updating.

But today, when I installed Neverwinter Nights, it says I used up over 2 GB of space. The box says it should only take up 1.2 GB. Is there something wrong here? I think there must be.

So I tried updating the BIOS by following the Gateway website's instructions, and it didn't work. So I called Gateway and they said the only way for me to get it updated was to send it in to Gateway, which would take 2 weeks. But he also said there was no reason to update so it would just be a waste of time.

So I ask you. Is there any reason to update, and if so, do you think it would really correct this hard drive problem?

Ryder, What file system are you using on your drive (fat32 or NTFS) and how large is the drive? If it is a larger partition and the programs have a lot of small files (or a lot of files) then it can consume a lot more diskspace then the combined files. Fat is worse then NTFS in this respect

Also the BIOS doesn't care about HD space used/free, all it cares about is total size and C/H/S (physical specs) the OS and file system are the only things that report HD usage info.
