Real9 looks decent, but its decoder severely blurs out fine details. Best for basic animations IMO. Many fansub groups are now using R9 for all but the highest quality animes.
I will probably write a short followup comparison that examines proper anime encoding, from source to final encode.
I mostly use XviD, but I am not too sure after this article. Recent XviD builds produce motion artifacts at low bitrates, even with the stable releases. Might finally be time to take a serious look at H.264. It is extremely slow, but the quality remains consistent.

Yeah, those MPEG-1 anime encodes are horrid to watch. If you want to clean up bad video, you can try using ffdshow to post-process the video during playback. http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/
Once installed, open its properties, uncheck all codecs, then select "raw video". ffdshow will now intercept the video stream during playback. Adjust the post-processing properties accordingly. I advise turning off "raw video" support after you are done with the badly encoded film, as the extra post processing can severely blur properly encoded content. |

What is posted is actually just a small fraction of the graphics. I just finished backing up the project. Several thousand compressed and uncompressed pics, plus plenty of video clips. Took multiple CDs. |

I think he meant 1.5Mb/s
It took about 1.5 minutes to get the post. 278 Images in all!!
Rob: You must have had to wait a loooong time to get that on there. Thanks for taking that time though. Very informative and well written article!
