CD roms gone

Hey need some help here, I was installing a cd writer in a computer then installed Nero but after the install it gave me an error... but now windows can't find either the CD rom or the CDRW ...

I have never seen this happen before... can anyone give me some hints here. BTW the OS is crappy WinME it's not my computer. I can't remember the error that nero gave but it was something about not being able to find any CD drive.. even though I installed Nero off a CD..

everything is up to date on the PC
K7S5a Mobo
256mbs DDR ram
30 gig HD maxtor
XP 1800 cpu
Light on burner
generic CD rom

I'm probally going to update to OS to either win2k or XP havn't decided but I'd like to know what could have caused this and how to fix it?

I had the same problem with my Laptop Running Xp, the day i got it i installed nero to replace the dumb Drag'n'drop CD, and then my cdrw/dvd disappered in windows, i could'nt get it back, so i reformatted, i hope your OS update will work

yea that is what I'm looking at a reformat, I have never had any problems at all with Nero intill now. The OS still works fine, it just can't find the CD RW or rom.. I've went intro the BIOS just to make sure they wernt disabled but they are fine, I can still boot from CD but as soon as windows opens.. they are gone

Have you gone to safe mode and removed the drives so your os can reinstall the drivers? Just a thought.
