Hi all!, i am going to buy a new PC soon, and the only choice i have is an intel pentium 4, well the thing is thats what available here, if you can recommend me which intel motherboard is compatible with linux. It should be like it should not have a built-in soundcard and AGP support, i want an SBLive Value soundcard because i think its the best one for linux considering whats available here, what about the VGA or AGP? , the other day i saw a Dell 7200 rpm hard disk on the net , it cost about $100 . Is that good? ummmmm what else!, well anything you can recommend about buying a new PC which should run both linux and windows properly considering compatibility. Thanks. |

Sound: SBLive Value! Will work Great
Video: ANY NVIDIA Card will work wonders.
HD: Any IDE HArd drive should work fine
Most NIC's will work fine as well. Just don't go get some crazy brand Stick to things like 3com, dlink, etc
If you are looking to use onboard sound (I wouldn't considering how cheap the SBLive is) you will need to look up the onboard chip on the specific mobo. Most work fine.
As far as onboard Video, RH supports most of the Intel integrated graphic chipsets.
Dunno what else to tell you As far as "regular" hardware goes, linux will support most of it.

I would discourage the Radeon unless you're going for a high end one (9000 upwards) as there are problems getting them to work too well in XF4.3 It can be done, just not as easily as the NVidia cards.

I'd say skip the ATi card all together. It's usually easier to get games running with Nvidia hardware. If you think ATi's driver support in Windows is iffy wait to you see the support they provide Linux users. NVidia has not only faithly provided drivers for Linux they've also developed an installer as well. They're leagues ahead of ATi in that respect and that's why I recommend their cards.
And SB Live's are usually work right out of the box with any modern linux distro so that's a safe bet too.
Welcome to the club!

Yeah, next Graphics card I buy will be NVidia, just because of how they support Linux. ATI may have better cards, but they're not much good without the drivers. |

I don't have the # right in front of me...... but the ATI RADEON 7500 ??? that cunokyle and myself both have ..... configures automatically and works great!
I don't know how well it works with anything other than mandrake.....but it does work very well with the system I have (cunokyle has the same). |

That is exactly what I was going to say, the ATI Radeon 7500, 8000,8500,9000, etc are all 100% compatible with Linux. Under the video configuration menu each of the ATI Radeon cards is listed, there are no drivers to install. |

Sure, I've seen your posts that said Mandrake configures your Radeon automatically. The thing is it's usually easier to get games to run with NVidia hardware. A good example was getting HL to work in wine in Linux. The readme stated I didn't need to do anything extra to get it to work with Nvidia drivers. If you had a 3DFx card or an ATi card you had some experimenting to do. I think the same thing was true with NWN. The game would often work with ATi's cards but it was a lot more troublesome than it was using NVidia's cards. I can't think of any more examples off the top of my head but I know they're out there. To me it's worth setting up the NVidia drivers (which has gotten REALLY easy with the new installer) for the first time when you install the OS if you'll have less troubles on down the line. |
