FM transmitter
Im going to be getting a new job here this week sometime. It'll be driving a delivery van on fairly long runs out of state. Well, Im assuming the van is a base model, so no cassette/CD player. Im going to use my Discman (and later upgrade to an mp3 "discman") to listen to CDs. Id like to find one of those FM transmitters so I can set the radio to a station and listen to it that way. Anyone know where I can find one relatively cheap?

"one relatively cheap"

the trouble with the low end xmitters is they drift a bit - this is problematic for digital recievers and their precise tuning - they work much better with old analog receivers - if you constantly need to tweak the frequency; make plans for a quality tuning inductor or a better [costlier] device - good luck!

Another thing to think about. I recently got XM Satellite radio in my truck. It's great! 101 stations. Hardly any commercials. Only $10/month. And you get a good variety of stations. Comedy stations, news, weather, talk, and of course, lots of music. And it's all uncensored, so you get to listen to it the way it was meant to be listened to.

Yeah, thats another thought, but If I go XM Id put it in my car since that head unit is XM ready. How much are add-on XM recievers though? If I could find one and somehow get it to "broadcast" to the vans radio without altering the wiring that would be cool. Im considering that for my car though.

I've got the Delphi system. The receiver is $130. I have a kit for the house ($60) and another kit for the truck ($60) and a portable radio (boombox). The boombox was $100. The receiver unplugs from it's cradle in the truck and you bring it in the house with you and plug it into that cradle, then if you go to the beach or something, you plug the receiver into the boombox. So, you only pay for 1 receiver and one service ($10/month). But you have sat. radio in your car, house, everywhere you go. Now, if you use the radio you have in your car, you'd have to get a different kind of receiver for that. They are usually more expensive and not portable. If you buy another receiver, you have to pay for another service. That's why I like the Delphi set-up. The Delphi also has a better display and better controls, IMO. If you get the Delphi for the work truck, the auto kit plugs into the cig. lighter for power and the cassette player for the signal, like alot of CD adapters do. If you don't have a cassette player or don't like the extra wires, you can get an FM-Modulator. That's what I did. I got the Delphi one, I think it was about $50. I looked on-line for good prices. But prices were the same everywhere I looked. I ended up getting everything from my local Circuit City.

Thats pretty sweet Idigguns, I'll have to check it out. Jak, that would do, but only if I was allowed to install it into the van. That would work for the car though.

www.ccrane.com also sells a transmitter. It transmits on the FM band. I think it's about $79.95. Or, you can build a very basic one that broadcasts on the AM signal
You need a vacum tube for that though
