| What CD drives do you build with?
I just wondered what CDrom drive you builders have had the best luck with?I'm kinda limiting this to ATAPI CDrom drives, not CD-RW.
The one I've used the longest without a problem is a 52x Creative.
I have been using Artec drives but I RMA'd two of them recently,so I'm probably gonna stop using them.I used them initially because of thier good transfer speeds.
I have a BTC drive that's good(but noisy)but I use it only because it has a shorter depth dimension, making it usable in cases where putting the drive in a lower drive space would have the back of the drive hitting the motherboard.
Recently picked up a pair of Lite-On drives that seem ok.
Anyone have a preference they base on good transfer speeds, reliability etc?
TIA for any replies

I use Lite-on 52x CDROMS in all my builds. They're only around $20. I've never had a problem with any of them.

Too bad no CD-RW... I was going to say I always use Lite-On. When it comes to regular CD drives, I usually stay away from Creative labs because they usually have too many "features" that they want enabled and stuff...
In the last Lite-On review I read, they were burning and ripping faster than Plextors, and I know from personal experience that they will burn practically any format you need. (I make a lot of Karaoke- CDGs)
So, if they make regular drives, I'd say go with Lite-On, other than that, I pick up whatever is cheapest and 24x or higher at the local computer shop. | |

Used to go the Pioneer route, now whatever I can pick up that is the cheapest when someone actually wants a CD-ROM. For the $10-15 price difference, most people will spring for a entry-level DVD-ROM, usually Hitachi.

I usually use Samsung (for a lot of things) their warranty is good and they are usually quite cheap.
However LG I've had pretty good luck with also |

For other people's system , I would go Lite-On
For my own I would go as fast/reliable/fancy as possible, from Pioneer to Yamaha F1 etc...

for regular cdrom drives, i have had very good results with mitsumi & liteon.
but if you are building a bunch of systems at once, try to find a good deal on a quantity purchase for whatever you can find...most cdrom drives manufacturered today are quite reliable and similar to each other. |
