I just did a clean install of 98se yesterday.Loaded all my software from the factory CD's,and rebooted, and had a virus.I fought with it for a while, and finally decided it would be easier since I had no new files, just to format again, and install everything all over, except scan all the CD's with AVG before installing.Which I did.
I had no viruses detected, and installed some software.Later tonight I took some pictures today, and installed the drivers for the digicams, rebooted and "ALERT!" now I have 4 files with viruses
Win32/Dupator
and A Trojan Dropper
Scanned with AVG,and it healed/quarrantined the viruses. So all is well again I hope.I have used these same CD's many times to install drivers/programs when formatting my computer, and have never had a problem with a virus.
Is it possible for the CD to somehow cause a virus? Or could I have gotten them from AVG when it did the definition update? Or is it something else?
I have only been to TechIMO,and Yahoo Messenger, and Google toolbar D/L.But only got the virus alert after installing the drivers for one of my cameras.
What gives?Anyone have an idea where I could have gotten these little boogers?
TIA
BC

I just ran a scan, and quarantined all the viruses again.Rebooted, and rescanned the drive which at that time had no viruses.
I opened the page to techimo, clicked the link to this page, and now I have the same viruses again Am I actually getting them here??
I am going to clean it once more, and open the browser to something besides techimo, and see if I still get infected.
I'll post the results |

It may be a RAM caching virus... You know, it loads in the RAM and even when you clean the hard disk, it just loads itself back onto the HDD from the RAM.
BRB with the virus' info...
David
EDIT: Ok, HERE is some info on that virus. Also, virusscan the cd that has the camera drivers on it. Just in case...
EDIT2: Doh... GZ3 beat me to it...

Ok, Click Here to download rmdptor.exe, a removal tool for W32/Duplator. HERE is a page with instructions on how to use it.

Thanks for the links David, I did scan all the disks already.I almost believe it's coming from my ISP, since all is fine until I open the browser
AVG says it has healed the virus everytime it detects it,and shows no virus after I run the scan the second,an d third time, but when I open the browser, I have a virus.I went to Geocites, closed the browser, and had a virus, same thing when I went to hotmail.techIMO,and msn.It has to be coming through the ISP.Looks like I'm gonna send sofnet an e-mail. |

do you have nortons anti-virus? or macfee? or something else? try scanning it with another virus program. ya never know what one program picks up and another does not. Also, delete all of you internet history and cookies, etc. Also, try uninstaling the browser your using and re-install, it couldnt hurt.
That is really weird hope you find a fix |

Yo brain,
Is the program you're running on a bootable floppy disk? If so, when you get a dos prompt, make sure you're in the "A" drive (A:\...) by typing "A: "and enter. When you get to "A:\>" type in DIR/W ( A:\>DIR/W) Whatever files are on the disk should appear now. Your looking for for a ".EXE" file more than likely, such as "cleaner.exe"... you get the idea, right? Then type the file name in and hit enter.
Hope it helps.

Believe it or not. I got a virus from installing a game once. I know it was from the game ,because at the time I was yet to be on-line. It was the strangest thing. But,it happened. I don't remember the game anymore. Norton Anti-Virus discovered it. |
