Hia people hows it going, 'fraid you got another noob on the site
!
Got a question for you allready, basically when i use a CD the machine reboots. When ever i try to copy or install stuff from the CD i seem to get about 10mb (tops) copied/installed then it reboots
The CDROM was a 24x from 1998 (old timer) so i thought that had just worn out from age, so i bought a nice new liteon CDRW, plugged it in and exactly the same
Ive tried it with 2 seperate HD's set as masters so its not the Windows install buggering up, ive not changed the IDE cable setup and the CDRW is set as a master, the only thing that has changed is that ive put a removable HD caddy thing in, but that shouldnt change anything, same plug same wire etc.
The only thing i can think of is some sort of CD buffer on the M-Board? so that when it has to buffer or index any data over 5/10mb it crashes?? ( BTW its an abit kt7-non raid )
Anyhelp Appreciated Thnx

Make sure you are using an ata133 IDE cable not an ata66.

Hi, Andy90, Welcome to techIMO!!

Not sure about your problem. What OS is it?
You should try turning off DMA in the device properties if it 's windoze, and see if that helps.
Cheers

CDROM
I dont think its the cable as it worked fine since i built the thing! about 5 years ago ( its had updates dont worry ) it just stopped working, it did this a while ago, was acting wierd but it sorted its self out so i thought it was prob dirt on the lens or something

CD's only use ATA66 at best, so can't see why a ATA133 cable will help, pyro.

Only helps with faster HDD's, I thought.

Doubt it. It's more likely to be software. One way to tell is to make a DOS boot floppy disk, then boot with it, and try copying a large amount of files off a CD. I betcha it works flawlessly.

Try turning off DMA.

Welcome to TechIMo Andy.
How long since a scandisk or defrag? Sounds like a software issue, maybe one of those will help. The impossible takes more time, and costs more money.

Ok popped back for a sec.
Erm, well i reformatted the computer before i reinstalled stuff, and ive barely installed anything, 1 game and drivers really. Shouldnt need to scandisk after a format should I ?
Andy ideas why it worked so long on a fresh install but stopped now? (the DMA thing)

i am gonna guess what i always do do a pc just ups and reboots on its own . the burner is pulling to much power when you are trying to burn something and it reboots . god i type that alot . try blowing out the power supply really well with caned air . it sounds like it is 5 years old i bet it is full of dust bunnies .. if that doesn't fix it i would try a different ps if you have one handy to try .
