Are all USB flash drives bootable?

I want to buy one that is, so I need to know if I should be looking for one that lists "USB bootable" as a *feature*.

    Thanks!

I am not overly sure on this, but I think the drive needs to have the feature, but also needs the support of the BIOS on the PC to support USB devices for boot...

Yeah...the bios on the MB needs to support booting from a USB device...most newer motherboards have this feature.

Ok, my motherboard supports booting from USB devices. Can anyone confirm what tmx468 said... that the USB flash drive must also have "USB bootable" as a feature?

The way I see it, the USB would be detected as a hard drive (if your MB supports it)...since it's detected as a hard drive it would then have to be bootable...i.e. contain command.com or whatever files are needed to boot. Don't quote me on this, but I think most USB drives are the same...with the exception of some that double as MP3 players...so none are created and sold specifically as 'bootable' devices as tmx468 suggests. So just go get one, any one, load it up with everything you need to boot a pc with, and that should do it.

    Hope this helps!

    USB flash drive booting

I've been trying to figure out how to boot from a USB flash drive for the last couple of days, but I haven't made any headway. I dumped all the necessary files onto the drive, but after it gets through POST, it hangs for a while then returns that no OS was found.

I've not found a way to format the flash disk as bootable. Those which are able to be booted usually come pre-enabled for such (and it seems mine numbers among the supposedly bootable), yet no luck.

Anyone had any success with this?

I would not try. Im in desperate need of a new HDD but I keep my computer normal, no boot stuff. Older models will not work. It is not my job to tell you what to do, but I would not try it.
