| What would You Do With A CLASSIC Computer ?
Was looking at a curbside Comp. , when the Building's Super told me he had an old Computer he was going to throw away and would I be interested?
"Sure", I said, believing I might salvage a PentiumII or III; some EDO's, perhaps some Tape drive or just a small but usable Hard drive.
Well out he comes with this Computer and it's cleaner than my own, no dust on the screen all all the peripherial components including printer, external power supply intact.
All wrapped up without a scratch !
Any comments about a "Classic" ?

I think Daft's link provides a very good hint for what you should do with this computer--web server.
I don't think it'd be a great ftp server, or for something with 1,000,000 hits/day (exaggeration), but it looks like it works for other people. |

I found 3 at an auction last year and gave $5 for them, took them home and all 3 worked great only had 2 printers. They all had games loaded on the hard drive and a wordprocessor so I gave them to a family with 3 kids around the corner that didn't have money for a puter and their kids just went crazy over them. |

Paperweight? you might be able to salvage a 40Mb RLL, It reminds me of my first computer sorta
286 -10 OC'd to 12Mhz
640Kb Mem
40Mb RLL HD (louddddddddd)
Monochrome monitor.......
Might make a good word processor, no fancy designing, but basic text is fine.
does it run? |

If it works, give it to somebody who really needs a computer, ANY computer.
I fit doesn't, take out the guts and get some glass and industrial strength caulk and build yerself an aquarium :-)

Wanted to check out the Pentium I found first. Problem: needed KB Ps/2 adopter from 6 to big 5 which I had but also a serial mouse --which I couldn't find although I had one. So switched from adopter from KB to mouse but couldn't get into BIOS now--no KB/! Ahh! The perils of a curbside scavenger !
Will check it out .
The amazing thing--and I am not exagerating it was cleaner (on outside at least) than most people's one month old Comps. Like it had been shrinked wrapped a decade and a half ago !

P.S. MDS
I like your suggestion. But one thing I would be somewhat distressed by: if kids had cought the Adult "bug" of having the most Super-Duper computer on the block. Darn, when I was a poor kid growing up and some onw gave me a n old-worn roller-skates --the kind you put on your shoes with a "key", I was so thrilled !
Gee, That might make a good IMO topic, when do kids catch that "bug" ?

Looks like a good museum piece..... I'd use it for word processing and scheduling.

I could have picked up a whole truck load of old mac computers and peripherals. Some of the stuff was still new in the box.
An old customer of mine owned a garbage and recycling pickup service and he had tons of old mac hardware that a school was disposing of. He had me look it over to see if there was anything of value to me. I told him to pitch the whole works.
Never thought there might actually be a use for it...hehe
