Question about compatibility

I'm putting together a new system, and this is my first time, but I am pretty familiar with the insides of a computer. The question I have is when the Mobo says it can support 500MHz ~ 2000+ and faster and it is compatible with Athlon XP processors, what is the farthest I can go in the Athlon XP processors, I'm looking at either Athlon XP 1700+ or 1800, please can someone explain this to me, thanks! The Mobo I am looking at is a Gigabyte GA-7DXE.

It means it will handle any AMD Athlon processor from the early Athlon/Duron 500MHz CPU's up to the XP 2000+ CPU. So your choice of either the 1700+ or 1800+ will work just fine.

That AMD 761 chipset is getting a little long in the tooth.

You should be looking at the new nforce2 chipsets as in the Epox 8rda+ mobos. Only $85 at newegg.com.

Come on now, that is still a good chipset.
At least that Gigabyte board supports the current Tbred Athlons, unlike my MSI K7 Master. It will only support the Palomino's up to 2100+.

I didn't say it was a bad board. But, AMD has pretty much abandoned it and left the chipset production up to the experts. The 761 is getting old.

The nForce2 is the best out there right now (IMO), and that newegg price is quite reasonable in comparison.
