Since this is your first build, I recommend getting the CPU retail.
If your chip fries for some reason, AMD will replace it for free.

Yeah, you seriously want to look at the getting the processors with the "Barton" core. It's worth the extra to get that performance extra. I also agree with GZ - ditch that SB16. You can use that savings to put toward the "Barton" core proc.

I'd also seriosly look at getting a bigger HD as well. 40gigs disappears pretty quicky these days.

well, a good geforce 4 ti4200 is around 130 bucks right? well you can get a geforcefx 5200 ultra for another 10 bucks extra, get similar performance to the 4200, but still getting the "optimized" directx 9 portion(since he plans on playin doom 3), and once games start coming mainstream in directx 9, you're 4200 can push out the frames but not the quality...
