Human Brain Clock Speed??
While reading through the forums this morning, a question popped into my head, "What would be a good educated guess as to the "clock speed" of our brain? What would be CAS Latency of our brain accessing memory?
Now i do realize that this is maybe an unthought of question and might be difficult to answer, but i just wanted to see what some ideas are.
Have a GREAT day all!!!

Actually I would look at the brain being multi-processor. It controls, your breathing, blood circulation, muscles, heart beat, waste processing/removal and many many more things that I can't think of right now. All simultaneously. It's not task switching, it's truly multi-tasking/multi-threading.
As for speed?? I couldn't wager a guess. Quadrahertz (4X)? Decihertz (10X)?

Not sure but I know I could use a memory "upgrade".

My brain is comparable to a C64 right now
Win XP HE
P4, 3.2gHz
Mobo:DELL Dim 8300
Radeon X850XT
DDR SDRAM 1022 MB
HD: Maxtor 7Y250M0, 250 GB
BIOS Phoenix
Maxtor 200GB ExHDD

Its not comparable. The brain isn't a digital device, each neuron can be connected to any number of other neurons, making the decision as to which to activate. Its not like a computer. Also, the neurons can work really fast, so its negligable the time difference between firing seratonin.
If this is a joke thread:
It would be MP, each working on a different thing, but able to communicate with each other easily. The CAS time wouldn't matter as the memory is running at full CPU speed. (This is why I can't wait for a CPU with 128mb cache, we've have 512kb-2mb cache sticks and on die cache availiable for ages now, can't they just work on making the memory as fast as the CPU. That's the main bottleneck to most systems, but I'm drifting. Tha's all I've gotta say about tha'._____

My brain occassionally freezes up on me and I have to cold boot. I suspect windows 95 for brains is the culprit.

Ok ok....so that is an improbable question.
Let us then compare the artificial to the artificial. How fast is Data's brain? You know, Data from start trek, TNG. Being and Artificial "Lifeform" that was created by a man, would Data have a "clock rating" for him? Since Data is an android and does not have as much multitasking as we do and he is running on a program, how fast is his neuroprocessor?
See, i dont know where these thoughts come from, they just appear. I thought i might bring some creative thinking and discussion to a Monday morning. Not that other threads dont bring creative thinking and discussion, this is just an off the wall question.Last edited by blubomber; August 25th, 2003 at 02:46 PM.

I actually read a thread similar to this one a year or two ago but, I dont remember where. It could be here burried somewhere deep. I also remember reading some interesting responses although the details elude me now.....

Thanks for those links OuTpaTienT. Some interesting reading.

I can't wait till they get a USB cable that you can plug into your ears.

Now that would interesting but also scary. Just think if someone were able to somehow alter your brain patterns just by uploading a new one. Scary, scary.

August 25th, 2003, 08:50 PM #14That would be great. You have a situation where you need to know calculus...you just upload the calculus patch, boom! You know calculus.Originally posted by SeanC

Your car breaks down...you upload the mechanics patch, boom! You're a mechanic specializing in the type of vehicle that you own. Of course a mechanic is nothing without his tools so you might still be up a creek there. But the possibilities are endless....and yes indeed, also, scary!

I would say it depends on the person. Unlike processors the more you use your brain the more/faster connections you get.
Comparing the human body to a computer is pretty funny. A 1 billion ghz cpu as the brain, 1,000 gig ram, but the bus is really faulty (ever try to transfer short term memory to long term memory - doesnt work all the time... also accesing the memory is histerical - sometimes freezes, no definite bus speed), hard drive space is exellent but degrades over time. Also susceptable to irreversable "computer viruses" such as alzheimers(not sure about the spelling). Also the possiblity of crashing through stress, etc. (I'm talking about strokes of course). Also possibilty of years of "out of service" as the result of a coma.
Too bad we cant get upgrades. I sure need one!!

I could use a good "overclocking". Any suggestions on cooling........?

With the research that GaTech is doing right now, they're debating on whether or not they should get a Cray Supercomputer. Their undisclosed model of the brain requires MASSIVE parallel computing. And like someone else said, it has zero delay between the "components". Being part of one of the research components of the project, I've gotten to see some rather interesting things, which of course they'd kill me if I told you...so just know that true AI is coming up pretty shortly, but it's gonna take a Cray or equivilant...massive $$$ too....
My R&D machine:
AMD 2100+ @ 2700+
Asus A7N8X-E
1GB Kingston PC333
2xWD 74GB Raptor's in SATA RAID
ATI 9700Pro w/ Zalman Heat Pipe

August 25th, 2003, 10:40 PM #20Dude that would SUCK. It would mean people who actually work hard to learn things, like myself, would become useless. Jerks who just coast through life would be able to get white colar jobs! The entire system where geeks run the world would no longer be the case! Our countries would be run by the jerks from school who think they're cool because they drink beer behind the school and swear lots.Originally posted by OuTpaTienT
