| What makes delayed cursor movement??
I built a pc with pc-chips mobo M810LR with onboard video. I am trying it out and ran the demo ver of RealMyst. The mouse movements are delayed on the screen. In other words when I move the mouse the hand on the screen does not move momentarily then catches up. Very disconcerting. CPU is Duron 750.
My regular box, which is Epox MVP3G5 with K6-2 450+ does not have this problem. I thought the faster processor would make the Duron faster. Video card?? Epox has Aopen PA3000 TNT2 vanta 16mb. I tried the onboard video with 8mb, 16mb and 32mb and it didn't seem to make a difference. System monitor on each machine shows 100% cpu usage.
I would appreciate opinions. It doesn't make sense to me. |

I'm certainly no expert on the topic and I'm not sure how involved the demo of real myst is, but I'm guessing you got a bit of a video bottleneck. Quote: |

| 32mb isn't bad, but it also depends on the board itself and what kind of memory it is.
My guess would be a video bottleneck is causing the problem. |

| A certain process in hogging up the processor usage... Close all applications and see if the CPU usage is still pegged at 100%.
What operating system are you using and what is on your startup menu? |

Lower screen color 24bit-16bit-6bit as low as you can stand~Lower is worse looking but faster running and screen res 800x600-640x480 again lower is worse but faster! |

I am running Windows 98. I have Norton av 2000 and the Pop-up stopper running. I will try disabling these and play with colors and resolutions.

OK, I disabled the popup stopper and Norton av and also changed the resolution to 640x480 with 256 colors. There is still a delay before the mouse movement shows up on the screen but I think it might be less than before. CPU usage still at 100%. RealMyst test will not allow anything less than 256 colors.
I think the waves and wind going all the time in the game might account for the high cpu usage. Does an onboard video use processing cycles for displaying images on the screen? A video card has its own processor, right?
Thanks for your posts.

what's slowing you down a lot is the onboard video which is running a so so chip which also means that it's relying on the system memory and chip to do all your 3d processing for you which means you're gonna have slow video. this doesn't happen on your other system, because your vidcard takes a huge load OFF the main processor which means you get better performance.
the best way to do things is to get a new videocard and stop using that on board video. |

Are you saying that the processor usage is at 100% even when the system just idles? If that's the case, there's definetly something running in the background that you are unaware of... I had a similar problem with Win2k where the processor usage was at 100% for no apparent reason. Printing which took less than a minutes to start took 10~15 minutes, programs were running sluggish, etc... After wrestling it out for about 2 hours to find the cause, I just decided to reinstall Win2k rather than waste anynore time looking for the cause of the problem. After the reinstall, all was back to normal.. I very much doubt that even the slowest on-board video card would peg the CPU usage at 100% constantly... |

When I say constantly at 100% cpu usage I mean when I have the demo RealMyst running. It is much less than 100% running everyday aps.
I plan to sell the Duron, I was just using it to see how it performed. Thought I might keep it and sell the k6 but I think I will let it go.
Thanks for the info,

| Then it is your onboard video... your processor is doing most of the work because the onboard video can't do it all |
