comp shutting down by its self

Every once in a while this window pops up on my computer counting down from a minute saying my computer is going to shut down because of some file and then my computer restarts and its starting to do this more and more and becoming a real pain does anyone know how to fix this. i thought it was a virus but I have McAfee virus scan and it should work. If any one could help me out that would be great.

read about the blaster worm on mircosoft and norton's sites. sounds like you got it, and quite late i might add.

Your virusscan is useless unless you update the database regularly.

Get the stinger from network associates site, run it, and patch your os like intolerant suggested.

Stinger is a VERY useful tool. It may not be able to complete a scan though before your computer shuts down, (seen it happen )

If this is the case, you get the reboot message, do this
Start -> Run - > command
Type shutdown -a and press enter,

This will stop the shutdown sequence, but will not prevent if from happening agina. You will need to do as often as necessary while stinger runs.

If your computer insists on shutting down, you might want to try and kill the 'msblast.exe' from task manager.

It might prevent the crashing (thou I cannot verify this as I haven't seen a system that would crash with the 1minute countdown).

(press ctrl-alt-del, select task manager, look for 'msblast.exe' and click terminate or whatever the kill button is)
