| A Question About Windows XP
Hi,
I just wanted to know if anyone has a cure for this? I have setup my pc using Xp and well the shutdown seem to be rather slow, it will say "Running ShutDown Scripts" for 30 seconds and then turn off, i was wondering if anyone else has this problem or if they know the cure!
Thanks for the help! |

My dad's Windows 2000 does the same thing......
I think it is some process that is taking it's time to shutdown....
I'm not sure what it could be, and would be equally interested in the answer.

Don't worry about it, it's just XP phoning home to MS reporting your activities before it ends the session.

C'mon guys, paranoia is one thing......
The OS just takes this time to close up processes that are running. There's a thread in the Operating Systems section about turning off many of these processes which choke up the system anyways. Also see: http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/winstartupnew/2.shtml | |

Truth is... nobody really knows for sure. There are lots of opinions floating around but no hard facts. From my own experience I can tell you that XP does do "something" via the internet without giving any clue as to what it is doing. I have meticuliosly disabled any and all automatic functions I could find as well as used every utility for this purpose. I have scanned for viruses and run anti spy SW and it STILL displays this activity so you tell me. What's it doing ????????? |

Well there is major HD activity going on when my PC is in screensaver mode for like 5 minutes. Does it backup something or is it Norton AV scanning my disk? Any ideas.
Ehmm I will check the activity LED on the NIC next time he (ehmm she ) does it again. Maybe it is phoning home |

BTW Zone Alarm blocks in and out traffic.
I have given services.exe and svchost.exe full permission for in and outbound traffic.
Why do these two want to connect or even like to act as an server?
The last I don't know exact, its some time ago I permitted those two to enter internet. |

| yeh thats the stupid system restore feature. I wouldnt doubt that XP phones home everything you do. On the windows update site it says nothing about not sending any info to MS like 95/98/2000/ME does. Also when you send them the error report it send your IP address and your serial number to them. |
