And, along those same lines.. I have just bought 2 - 33.6 USR Sportsters externals from eBay for 5 bucks + shipping to take with me the next time I go to visit relatives who live way out in the boonies...they use a USR winmodem, and sometimes (mostly on rainy days) they can't even connect. They must dial into one small town (switch room) and then to the larger town (fiber optics about 20 miles) to get to their ISP.
To say the least, their connects leave a lot to be desired.
It is my opinion that 33.6 kbs will work a lot better than a 56K winmodem. (I also have a 56K V.Everything Courier external that I will take, and between those two.. I should be able to determine which will work best.
While I was testing those 33.6 USR Sportsters, I surfed around for a bit...I'll swear if I could not tell a lot of speed difference between the 33.6 and this 56K I normally use...so, if the 33.6 connects good and will allow them a bit better use, it will be worth the effort.
And...yes, IMO..the USR hardware modems are the best..bar none..and I have tried quite a few. You can get either a good ISA hardware USR or if you watch eBay for a few days, you can even pick up a Sportster external for a few bucks...either one should be better than whatever he is using now. |
