Another possible solution

Hopefully you have found a solution. If you have, please post the solution. If not, try this.
(The JPEG file type in the previous post did not work for me)

1. Make a copy of the file and place it on the desktop of the boot drive.

2. Try opening up the document from within Photoshop; As a Smart Object
(If it opens, it will open flattened and not layered, don't panic)

3. Close the file (If the next step doesn't work, you can always go back to step two and salvage a composite version)

4. This is the key -- Now go to the Open Recent flyout list and choose the document again.

In my case, it worked. It opened the layered version of the original file. This step bypassed the Smart Object instruction and the Adobe tag that is somehow breaking these files.

Good Luck

Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document

Try this:
Go to
Start>Control Panel>Folder Options: Click on "View" Tab
Look for "Hide Folder Extensions" if it is ticked - un-tick it and click Apply and OK.
Now try opening your reluctant PSD doc. and see what happens.
Good Luck

Just to let anyone who is looking for a solution to this problem. I tried the 'Open as' suggestion. As I knew it was a PS file in layers I just said 'open as' and chose PSD. It opened like a dream.
I have also unticked the 'Hide extensions...' box so that I can see the extensions. Might be useful in the future.
Thanks all, Regards, Penelope

Cool
Found a tricky solution =)

Hi all

First of all sorry for my bad English and I hope my solution will help you.

I had the same problem and decided to look and compare a working file with a "corrupted" one in a HEX editor. Guess what I found? For some reason, sometimes Photoshop is adding a few bytes in the beginning of the file when the file is saved, and then the same Photoshop is giving an error and complains about that files... All you have to do is to delete that unnecessarily group of bytes.

Assuming that you already know what is a HEX editor and how to use it I'll write here a few steps you can do before opening a "corrupt" PSD file:

1 - Make a back-up (copy) of the file before making any changes.
2 - Open the "corrupted" file in an usual HEX editor (NOT text editor!) and look for such groups of character just in the beginning: 8BPS and after a few bytes 8BIM another group of bytes and again 8BIM.
3 - This succession should be respected strictly: 8BPS ... 8BIM ... 8BIM. These groups should be very close to each other and it's easy to find them.
4 - Delete all bytes before 8BPS group (Shift+Delete) and save the file... =)
5 - Open it in Photoshop and Enjoy.

Hope it works for you.
