why does Paint Shop Pro hate me?

it never saves the background!!!

no matter what i set it to it will just be white. what the deal?

Are you talking about your avatar? Or do you just want something to be transparent? What's probably happened is your background is a layer under whatever is on top. Your true background is whatever color you set it to, but the background of the top layer isn't.

i set the background color to whatever layer was already there. i didn't add or take out any layers.

(i have no idea how to use this program)

Well, there's the problem... default color in most image editors are white unless you selected a transparent document as your new image to start with... What you need to do is make a GIF file with transparency....
