| Hello- Complete webpage-building amateur
in actuality I really dont know anything about it and have never been interested, but my gf wants to build a page for herself cuz shes a singer, and asked me to look into it for her cuz shes not technically inclined at all.
So... apart from buying a domain name....uh....what else should be done? What would be the easiest way to build a simple page? Are there inexpensive templates or anything like that? She wants to put up pics and sound clips too. Thanks, I am clueless when it comes to this stuff. |

you will need the site hosted (sometimes ISP's will give you some webspace, but depending on how much you need, etc, you will need to find a host). for hosting music clips, i am seeing more and more musicians using MySpace.com and PureVolume.com . if no one helps you out by the time i get back from class, i will see if i can get you more info. |

Hi what you need is basically 2 things , somewhere to host your site and somewhere to host your domain name(dns server). Where ever you buy your domain they usally do the DNS as well.
i recommend www.xreg.co.uk might not be the cheapest but will host your domain using their servers.
What you need to do then is create a the site, use something like frontpage or dreamweaver. you will soon grap it. after you have made the site you need need to upload it somewhere. This can be paid hosing or your ISP usally has free webspace.
After that is uploaded, you need to "point" the domain name to where the site you uploaded is.
if i was you i would be looking a all in one package. www.godaddy.com seems to be a favorite here. or if you want a european one www.oneandone.co.uk seem to be the best |

OK, I looked at godaddy.com and am ready to buy the 4 bucks a month hosting plus the domain name....now I noticed they offer a webpage building program called Website Tonight which claims to be templates, images, etc...where all i have to do is type in text and load files, etc...its $5 a month- does that mean that if I use it to build the site, I have to pay $5 a month for the site to continue functioning properly? or is it a one time thing you use when your make changes to the page? Is it worth my time or should I look into something like Dreamweaver instead? |

This sounds like it is a little too advanced for you (Not trying be be harsh, I'm just trying to spare you some pain.)
I jumped into a website a long time ago not knowing what I was doing, and luckily I had a friend who personally taught me how to use everything, but chances are you don't have that luxury like I did. Have you thought about having someone do it for you?

GoDaddy is a great provider - I've had email service from them and domain for over a year, and my website www.elementcrush.net is hosted there also. I don't have a complaint about them, good customer service too. When I activated the hosting account, I ran into some issue about not being able to see what I had uploaded.
After calling their 24/7/365 line (not 1800 but whatever) it was answered by a tech who tried a few different things and eventually it started working. Ended up me not waiting long enough for the activation to go through, that's all.
Anyways, consider getting Dreamweaver, don't bother with Website Tonight. I'm still working on it, but the home page of my website was actually created with Photoshop, then imported into Dreamweaver for some tweaking. I've found that's basically the best way to do it, assuming you have Photoshop. If you do everything in Dreamweaver, yes it's possible but so much more can be done in less time with PS.
Good luck. |

Hosting by GoDaddy and a domain too is only $10 or so for the first 2 months. After the two months, you'll have to renew your hosting costs but your domain will be yours for 10 more months.
To build a webpage that's complete customizable, use Microsoft Frontpage, I used it for my first ever websites before using Dreamweaver (MUCH better, but more technical knowledge makes things a lot easier), they don't look pro in any aspect, but hey... |
