Need a Couple of Illustrator Tricks

Been reading my Illustrator books and GOOGLEd for this, but haven't found what I'm looking for so far.

Starting w/ a 4" x 4" square canvas, I overlaid half the canvas w/ a blue rectangle. I want to take a blue text string and have it straddle the blank region and blue field, where the text that straddles the blue rect is rendered as blank (like the canvas or whatever is under the blue rect) and the text on the other side of the canvas renders normally (as blue text.) Basically, this is a XOR-type operation. Is there a way to do this directly ? I can envision possibly doing this by making duplicate, reversed images of the text, but it's tricky and time-consuming.

Is there any hope ? TIA...Jet
