Recomendations for long term storage of a Inkjet printer

I have a Canon I560 printer I bought used for a backup printer that I want to store long term.

1. Should I leave the ink tanks in the printer or remove them and store them separately?
2. How about the print head? Same thing?

I went through and checked the printer. All is ok. I cleaned the bottom of the print head as it was covered with dried ink. I also cleaned those soft nylon cleaning tabs by the foam pads where the head parks.

Thanks in advance.

My freind and yours - Google - has all sorts of information:

Looking after your inkjet cartridges – tips and hints

Did you know that there is a right way and a wrong way to store your inkjet cartridges? Most people don’t realise that if you store your inkjet cartridges the wrong way it can cause problems with printing.

When storing your inkjet cartridges, ensure that you store upright. This will provide for best printing. And don’t worry if you are thinking all is lost because you have already been storing that spare inkjet cartridge upside down in your desk drawer. Just remove it and store upright for a few hours before you intend to use it – this will fix the problem.

Printer ink cartridges don’t like too much heat or cold so keep away from high or freezing temperatures. And don’t ever leave your inkjet cartridges in direct sunlight.

Follow these few steps and you will find that your inkjet cartridges will provide you with the performance you are expecting.

But then these forums would be out of business if no one asked questions here.

The ink is stored in a 'tank' not a whole 'cartridge' as HP use to do (w/ print head). I would cap off the bottom port and tape the 'breather' hole.

BUT, I'm most concerned about the separate print head assembly ($50 replacement). I know if it is left without any ink flowing through it, it will dry out. I'm was thinking about soaking it in 'Windex' or Isopropyl Alcohol and a few hours and let it dry then seal it in a plastic pouch.

BTW; the printer would be stored in a unheated attic. Temp. range 20-100 degrees.

INKJET PRINTER LEFT IN THE COLD

I left my printer in the house but the heat went off and the printer was likely frozen to say -20C for a week or more. Now nothing will print black or colors, even when a new color cartridge was put in? Any ideas or is this now scrap?
