Graphic / Logo Help Needed!

I'm working on a graphic and cannot figure out how to get it to work like I imagine it in my head. I know I've seen ads before with a lot of something (rocks, M&Ms, etc) with some removed to create a word. Attached is what I'm trying to do. I've got the bugs all laid our on the page and I can layer the white text above them but I dont want half-bugs on the sides of the letters. Is there an easy way to cut the text leaving whole bugs around the edges of the letters or am I stuck cutting the letters out and then pasting the bugs back in?

If anyone can help I have a psd file as a work in progress. I need to get this done ASAP so any help is greatly appreciated!

I don't know of anything faster than erasing the letters where the bugs are, sorry.

welp I took the time last night to start from scratch and place each bug individually. I finished in just under 2 hours so not too bad. im really happy with how it turned out though im sure there is an easier way in either photoshop or illustrator to create a "no fill" area and get the bugs or whatever object you choose to randomly fill the rest of the image.
