combining or juxtaposing two .jpg images into 1 image

I have two .jpg photo images that would, IMHO, look great juxtaposed as one image. Does anyone know how to accomplish this? I would prefer not to have to invest in photography/imaging software, but I know this may not be possible. I searched on Google and this forum to no apparent avail. I am not a photography/graphics virtuoso, just a layperson who wants to complete this one task, but I am certainly willing to invest the time and effort to learn what this task requires, if it can be done.

My PC is a Dell M1330 notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium and Microsoft Office Student edition 2007.

Thanks for your attention and any advice/opinions.

I appreciate the user who responded to me privately, provided suggestions for freeware to combine images, and juxtaposed my desired images for me. Recently I discovered a freeware program that easily combines images into one panaromic image. It's not superfancy, but works well for combining images. If anyone is interested, this is the program website:

I used a tool called hugin to do my panoramic shot, and it worked pretty well
there was one spot I would of liked to see some improvement, but it was partially my fault for taking pics w/o a tripod
    hugin results
