What kind of animation are you interested in doing? 2D or 3D and in what style? Are you looking to just inject animation into actual live movies? Looking to create Japanese anime, for example? Cel shading? What?!

The thing is this: you get what you pay for. With animation there are a host of really amazing programs that you can use. For 3D I've used Bryce, RDS, 3D Studio Max, my particular favorite is Maya or Lightwave but all of those cost money. Aspiring artists that attend classes at various unis can usually get student discounts. (I'm not an artist mind you... but I dated a handful in my prime.)
Anything that you find that's free is going to be the suck (sorry I couldn't find any sophisticated way of putting it). I've read things online about Animator DV working great for stop motion. A quick online search turned up a plethora of free stuff (mind you, most of it is junk but some of it might be useful).
If you don't want to try for a trial of Flash (which I think would also be of interest to you if you like 2D art and are interested in putting it up on the web),Vectorian Giotto is a free alternative... I've never used it but it may be worth a look. Especially if you plan on getting into Flash when you have the cash (sorry, rhyme was unintentional).
VG Review can be found here: Vectorian Giotto - CNET Download.com (CNET... but to be frank I feel that CNET is usually a lousy source of information). Still, looks like a lot of folks like it so maybe you can trust that review.
Anyhow, good luck.“Arguing with anonymous strangers on the Internet is a sucker's game because they almost always turn out to be—or to be indistinguishable from—self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of free time.” ― Cryptonomicon

not necessarily, Daz has been offering some of its basic versions of software for free for a while, "limited time offer", but its been months now.
Products
Bryce 7 Pro, Daz Studio 4 Pro, Hexagon 2.5, etc.
Only one you have to pay for right now is Carrara 8.
Also for not too much in cost, you can usually find various forms of Anime Studio on sale on sites like Newegg and others, which can be neat to work with as well.

Cool stuff, Shyguy!!
Guess I'm out of the loop.
Yeah OP, go and download Bryce. Right. Now. Simply the best 3D rendering graphics arts program I've used (mainly because its all so easy in Bryce to create beautiful landscapes).“Arguing with anonymous strangers on the Internet is a sucker's game because they almost always turn out to be—or to be indistinguishable from—self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of free time.” ― Cryptonomicon

its actually easier using Carrara's landscape rendering, and generally much faster with rendering, but Carrara Pro isn't exactly cheap. Bryce is a bit higher quality lighting and effects than Carrara's from what I remember, Carrara is more intended for smaller scenes and animation, where as Bryce is more larger scenes, landscapes, and "Worlds".
Daz Studio is for small scenes and animations as well. Its possible to import/export most scenes from all 3, but sometimes can be tricky.
I have to figure out how to import a Daz Studio static scene into Carrara to use the Dynamic Fur function, or vice versa so that the Animation in Daz Studio has fur on the character from Carrara.
I haven't messed with any of it in months though, just haven't had time.
Another free trial, with limited functions, but even higher if not superior quality is Vue,
e-on software - Vue Pioneer
the full package with many of the paid for "modules" can really bring some ultra realistic scenes (of course you will need some hardcore processing power to get it done, but otherwise very high end), that easily blows Bryce and any Daz product away.
Though it is harder to learn and use than the Daz Products, at least with user interface from what I have seen.
You can see some of the work done with various Vue Products over the years: e-on software - Showcasei7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Note, Maya costs BIG BUCKS!!!

There's a Trial version, otherwise Maya costs over $3600, so I don't think thats an option, since the OP was looking for free.
Helps to read the thread in question, and what is actually being asked.

I'm about 3 miles from work, but I don't get to live over a booze emporium. :( Those places look decent, Surreal.
