Is this possible in The GIMP?

I found this tutorial and I cant seem to get it to work in The GIMP, I have never done anything with Channels before, So I don't know if its because I don't know what I'm doing or this kinda thing will only work with PS.

ok i tried the tutorial, but i have the german version of Gimp (i didn't want the german version) so i had to translate the words like "unsharp mask filter" and i get this, it's a nice effect but i gonna try it again!!

BTW the background is not the same it looks like fire, there is a render for it in gimp.

Well That Looks like its not quiet possible, If Your wanting to keep normal Image colors.
Well I guess The GIMP cant do everything yet.
