Most people think that JPG is an all-encompassing all-purpose good-for-everything image format. And to the contrary, it's not. It's good for one thing; shrinking file size. And it does it at the cost of image quality.
| Yes indeed. When you had a 300 or 600 dpi scan (in 1992-1994 when jpeg became a popular format) it [JPEG] was a life saver when you needed to transport that image from the office of the person with the scanner to your office on your 40MByte cartridge drive rather than over your Apple LocalTalk network, or if you were blessed your 10Mbit Novell network.
The problem is that digital camera manufacturers thought that JPEG was an ideal way to conserve space on that 2MByte smart media card in 1999. Too bad that they still use this format when 32MByte, and much larger, camera media are so common now.
Personally I would prefer an uncompressed image. If I want it compressed (with loss/artifacts) I will compress it.

Good job there Out. I learned about jpg's the hard way storing photo's of tornado's I have shot in the past as the photo's look like crap today compared to what they should have looked. Btw have you ever tried lightwave or mayo ? I've seen quite a bit of your work and you are great. |

Actually it seems the only problem IE has with PNG's is when the PNG's contain transparency. Otherwise it works ok. Most of the images in my article there are in fact PNG's, so if you saw them, then IE didn't have any trouble with them. (Assuming you're using IE.)
And the only way to get MS to ever fix anything is to twist their arm. The more people start using PNG's (when appropriate) the more likely future versions of IE will support them correctly. |
