    Easy photoshop Question...

I have an image .jpg that is a white simple text on a black background , (A company Logo)

I want to cut the text and put it on a transparent background.

Or can i fill the B/G with a transparency.

The text is not default pc, it was hand drawn and scanned but has very clean white on black so i wont have to clean the edges too much....

    Using Photo shop 7.0
    THANKS ALL

In the menu, goto LAYER / NEW / BACKGROUND FROM LAYER

Aftter making the background a layer you can simply select all the area around your text and hit DELETE.

(You can select the area any number of way. One of easiest might be to just goto the menu and choose SELECT / COLOR RANGE... and then click on area you want to make transparent, then click OK. That will select the area, now just hit DELETE.)

Thanks Outpatient , It worked a treat

Then i tried to open it in dreamweaver ultradev, i put in a star b'ground (.gif) and then added the logo but it came up with white all the way around the logo.

How can i get around this so there is just the white text showing on the star .gif b/ground...

    Thanks Again Your All LEGENDS

What format did you save the file as? GIF?

Try again and this time before you save it (or as you save it) make sure the MATTE is set to none.

Usually you want the MATTE color to be the same color as the background. Sometimes no MATTE can look ok, sometimes not.

Preferably you'd want to do any editing of the file right there in Photoshop. I don't understand why you're opening it in another program to add a background.

In Dreamweaver under page properties i saved the b/g as stars.gif wich gave a full b/g

Now i want to add JUST the text/logo so it has the stars behind it on the web page.

Am i being clear enough. (sorry, if not let me know)

Thanks Greatly Outpatient for your speedy replys..

At the moment i open the pict in dr/we and it has the whole photoshop image with b/g , i want the b/g to be transpaerent so it shows the stars in the b/g..

    Cheers again..

    ......k.

From Photoshop, after you go through the process of deleting the area around the text so it's transparent (you should see a checkerboard pattern, that means that portion is transparent)...then you need to save it as a GIF file. You can't resave it as a JPG because JPG doesn't support transparency.

    GIF supports transparency.
PNG also supports transparency but IE doesn't fully support PNG.

Note, when you save it as a GIF it'll be forced to reduce the color palette to 256 colors. If your logo has very few colors and sharp crisp lines then it'll probably be just fine. If it comes out looking poor, with jaggies or banding come back here and I'll help ya through reducing the colors prior to saving to minimize those effects.

Do me a favor and start a clean new thread with this subject as the question. And in the meantime I'll give some thought to how best describe the various processes involved. This is a huge subject with lots of forks in the road all leading to various solutions and all needing detailed explanations on when to use each solution and why it's best.
