Can a 8X AGP Graphics cards run in AGP v2.0 slots

Hi everyone,

Need help again! I'm looking at a new card coz my old card is a dud, been having problems with it since i got it. It's a Leadtek Winfast A340TDH GeForce FX5200 128MB Card, but i haven't been able to play and 3D games on it. Tested Direct3D and the entire system locks. So...i'm just getting tired of problems. I have a SL-65KV2-T motherboard from Soltek and i want to upgrade my card to a Gigabyte GeForce FX5700 256MB graphics card. Will i be able to use this card on my m/board?

Is it possible to use a 8X AGP card in a AGP v2.0 slot?

Thanks.
C

The GeForce FX5700 requires an AGP v3.0 slot or greater. According to the specifications, it will not work in your motherboard (v2.0). The FX5700 series is rather unique in this sense... as a lot of AGP 8X cards are backwards compatible. You should upgrade your motherboard to one that supports AGP 8X, or find a card that will work in AGP 4x (v2.0).

Where does it say that? I can't find it on nVidia's site or Gigabyte's. AGP 8x (3.0) is required to be able to work in AGP 4x (2.0) slots.

Mixing things up again, folks. The standard revision (2.0) tells us nothing about the slot's capabilities. It might be 1x/2x-only, 4x-only, or universal - and that's what counts. If that GF5700 can't go back to 1x/2x and the mainboard can't do anything else, it's a no go.

8x cards are required to work on 4x capable mainboards. Everything else is optional.

Hi Peter M,

Thanks for the reply. That's what I thought as well. But everyone has been confusing me.

My computer is seriously the problem when it comes to the Leadtek card. I'm thinking of upgrading to a completely new system. Well not completely. I never a P4 case, floppy drive, dvd-rom and cd-writer, all i need is the cpu, motherboard and ram. That should cost me a pretty penny but my card works beautifully on a computer with a agp v3.0 slot so....

Want to upgrade to a P4 3.2GHz (800FSB) with 2x512MB DDR SDRAM (400 MHz) on a ASUS P4S800D-E motherboard. What does everyone think? Graphics card is a 128MB GeForce FX5200.

Suggestions?

Thanks
C
