    128mb vs 256mb

Why are 256mb graphics cards not always as good as 128mb?

Because somtimes cards with 256mb have slower memory timings. Also, no games currently out need a 256mb video card, so the extra 128mb is useless.

What Bizkitkid said, plus that 256MB video cards tend to perform better at high settings. The 256MB version will perform better playing a game in a resolution of 1600x1200 than the 128MB version. While playing the same game in a resolution of 1024x768, the 128MB version of that video card will probably perform better due to faster memory timings. Right now I would go for a 128MB version of any video card. The extra 128MB's are pretty useless nowadays in my opinion. And spending all that cash for those extra FPS in high resolutions is just ridiculous.

I'm not so sure about that. On games like Far Cry and Joint Ops I run my settings around medium and get some pretty low rates at times. From what I've been reading, I'm not the only one. Alot of people are saying that their frame rates are considerably higher with 256MB of video memory. I can't speak from experience, however, since I'm still stuck with a 128 MB card. Also, just wait till Doom 3 comes out. I don't know if he plans on playing that, but I think 256 MB will make a big difference with that game.

What video card do you have? My 5900 Originail 128mb has no problems playing the Farcry Demo at highest settings.

But just remember it wasnt that long ago that we were saying go for the 64mb cards because the extra 64mb was useless...Now no one even bothers making 64mb cards. Im sure it wont be long before 128mb cards go this was as well.

I'd say they probably use cheaper ram on for 256mb graphic cards.

I have a 9700 All-in-Wonder. I'm not talking about the demo, I'm talking about playing on-line, mostly (and, yes, I know the difference between FPS and lag ). When I referred to other people telling me the same thing, I don't know what type of equipment they were running. 95% of the time, Far Cry runs pretty good for me, only occasional FPS drops. With Joint Ops, it happens alot more often. The new patch helps alot, but I still get some really low frame rates some times.

I jumped from a 32 to a 256 (ATI Radeon 9800 XT) and I have not runned into any problems with Far Cry or any other game. If the budget allows, is not a bad idea to get the 256, just because games are becoming far more detailed and memory hungry, for gaming is the way to go. If you just do casual gaming a 128 will do.

    My two cents,

i think that the problem could be that ur playin with some ppl that have dial-up, the same thing happened to me a while ago when i was playin stronghold crusader online with some ppl with dial-up and i had constant fps drops which r actually their fault, so don't criticize the card unless its doin aight in single player (and we all no that it is)
