You personally tested that slinky? And you can play Doom 3 at any setting... but how about you tell us how many fps he'll get with that.

They're not bad, but don't expect to run any DX9 games on higher graphics especially with a higher resolution. Even the FX5950 got killed in 3DMark03...

My recommendation would be a Radeon 9800 PRO if you're going for Far Cry... good luck nevertheless.

Uhh...your wrong about that. A 5950 can score well over 6000 points in 3dmark2k3. Hell, I have even seen some FX5900 score over 6000 points.

I have an FX5900 NU and I can run Doom 3 at High Settings at 1024x768 resolution and average 50-60fps.

This is what I am talking about. You can see even the most powerful FX (the 5950) falls victim to the 9800 PRO at higher levels in DX9 games. Even on lower resolutions. Don't waste your money on an FX. If you're spending anywhere near $200 buy a Radeon 9800 PRO for around $180-190. And if you're buying a good video card to run Doom 3 and Far Cry get a good video card now. Why spend $150-200 only to have to upgrade later. You could wait for the 512 mb video cards this fall but imo, I would just get a 6800 GT and be done with it.

It also depends on what game is being play. Nvidia cards perform better on some games, while ATI cards perform better on others.

In Short , Nvidia performs better than ATI in OpenGL while ATI is best at direct x games like Far Cry

ok well thats why I asked about Doom 3 running those specs, because I didn't know. And I'm just saying, a 5950 costs around $300 (for the 5900 too)... and for $80 extra bucks you could get a card that runs over 10000 in 3dmark03? Umm, yeah 5950 got killed...

y pay $300 for a 5950 that barely gets over 6k in 3dmark 03 and u can't OC it much, when u can geta 6800 for less than 300 and it gets close to 8k without any overclocking

anyways, it woulda helped a lot if u posted how much u have to spend, that would narrow it down A LOT, so.... if ur on a medium budget, get a 6800, if ur on a low budget get a 5700Ultra or a 9800se NOTHING LESS!!!

NVIDIA cards r gonna preform better in Doom 3 and also they'll work in almost all mobos without any problems, while ATI cards r incompatible with some boards, and get bugs in games. So i would suggest that u stay away from ATI....

I'd say the GeForce 6800 series is pretty much top of the line for Doom 3, ATI cards come close to it in performance, but not close enough. After the new Catalysts are released they will get even closer though, possibly about the same.

A good budget card for Doom 3, would have to be a ATI Radeon 9600XT or Radeon 9800 Pro.

Kind of off topic, but HL2 is also in openGL correct? That may influence your decision as well. Towards NVidia
