| Help me buy a new Graphics card
Guys i am looking for a graphics card, a modestly priced one, should be DX 9.0 supported and I should be able to play the new games doom 3 and far cry at medium detail, nothing fancy. A friend recommended Geforce 5200. Is it good? |

Even a Gforce 4 FX 5200 should be okay as long as you buy and MSI or equivelant with a 2 year warranty.........the secondary market stuff doesn't perform as well. Go to this site to read about them. http://www.pcguide.com/ref/video/perfOEM-c.html |

You should all note that while the GeForce FX series peforms quite well on older games such as Quake 3 and in the 3dmark01 benchmarks it did quite well but on any DX9 games it won't perform that great. All the FX series have significant reduction in framerates in DX9, which is exactly why I stay away from them and take a Radeon.
They're not bad, but don't expect to run any DX9 games on higher graphics especially with a higher resolution. Even the FX5950 got killed in 3DMark03...
My recommendation would be a Radeon 9800 PRO if you're going for Far Cry... good luck nevertheless. |

A lot of you seem to be reccomending an ATI. Which one is the best value for money in ATI? |

I agree that the Radeon is a good card, but ATI cards don't always work well with every mainboard.......check both ATI's and the motherboard manufacturer's web sites for possible copatability problems before buying one......Nvida cards seem to work on just about any mainboard. |

This is what I am talking about. You can see even the most powerful FX (the 5950) falls victim to the 9800 PRO at higher levels in DX9 games. Even on lower resolutions. Don't waste your money on an FX. If you're spending anywhere near $200 buy a Radeon 9800 PRO for around $180-190. And if you're buying a good video card to run Doom 3 and Far Cry get a good video card now. Why spend $150-200 only to have to upgrade later. You could wait for the 512 mb video cards this fall but imo, I would just get a 6800 GT and be done with it.

Get a 5900 XT for only $174 on Newegg. You'll be able to play Doom III @ 1024x768 on high detail settings with this card. |
