Advice Needed On Graphics Card Purchase

I have to start by saying that I don't know much about graphics cards. The only thing I really know is that the more MBs of memory the better. So I figured this was a good place to post. I currently have a NVIDIA GeForce4 460 Go (32MB) and I want to upgrade to a more powerful card for better gaming. What would you guys recommend given that I don't want to spend a lot of money but yet still want a good graphics card? Thanks for your help. By the way here are the rest of my specs on my comp if this would help at all. Intel Pentium 4 Mobile 2192MHz (I have a laptop), 512MB.

My budget is about 200-400 dollars, I don't play the most demanding games like Half Life 2 but I want something pretty good.

Make sure that you can change the graphics card in the laptop FIRST. On some, or most, laptops you can't upgrade the graphics card.

Just because the toshiba site says no upgrade does that 100% rule out the possibility of an upgrade? If I could find some guru do I still have a chance?
