    9550 for half life 2

hi , i might be going for Asus 9550/GE card which is 250/400 and the review on the internet says it is value-for-money card and they got a average about 36 fps at 800x600res high quality ( Doom 3 ) and 30fps in far cry - 800x600 resolution maximum quality . this card is pretty cheap over here ( i'm in India ) i wish i am in us so i can get xfx 6600GT easily . that is not possible .

so i am asking you guys if this one will run Half Life 2 smoothly and will it work smoothly in 800x600 high quality? i can get Asus 9600XT but i dont want to waste a lot of money on that since i am not a heavy gamer anymore....

    thanks in advance

Assuming its the 128 bit edition, it should be fine for half life 2 as the game is very flexible with different types of hardware you have. There's a review on Anandtech on performance of different video cards playing half life 2. Even a old old gforce 4 mx can pull out decent fps.

People are over estimating the system requirements used by HL2, the engine is coded so well that I can play it on my GeForce2MX perfectly smooth ( on the lowest res, textures etc. of course ) so that card will do fine.

I play @ 1200x1024 everything on high and the FPS rarely drops below 20, most of the time hovering in the mid 30's and always very playable. That is with a 9600np which is about equivalent or less powerfull than a 9550.

can you please post your card speeds ( core/mem ) ? the one which i am looking for is having 250/400 ( core/mem ) .. should I go for 9600np then if this is too low ? and over-clocking potential of this card is none ( thats what i heard )

    i have a Gigabyte Radeon 9550
I use the Omega Drivers which allow overclocking...i have it running

    250 Core
    225 Mem

i had a score of 3480 in 3d2k3 (overclocked) can't remember how high...

also i played Doom3 fine, not sure the settings..used the default settings I guess...and also play NFSU2 well also...

it's a good card and overclocks well, i am looking into getting a Zalman Heatpipe or Giant II or III for it ...comes with a dinky little HS....

Plain 9600 is 325/200 core/RAM, 9550 is 250/200. SE versions use the same frequencies, but with 64-bit RAM for halved throughput.
