Check out www.ncix.com (they're in BC). They usually have pretty good prices on video cards, plus if you subscribe to their newsletter you'll get discounted prices (they have a link on their site). You can also try www.pricenetwork.ca to find the lowest price on a particular item from a number of online and B&M retailers.

Would it be wiser to wait a few months, save up some more money , and go for the X800 XT PE or some other higher end card?

if you think you need a new card now, buy it, $500 is a pretty nice budget. Computer shiit is constantly being updated, so it doesn't matter all that much if you upgrade now or later. IMO, go for a 6600gt or 6800gt - plenty of performance for a reasonable price.
